Our Top 5 Movies of 2019

JC and the Lady-Wan were recently guests on The First Run. On the episode, we talked about 1917, this year’s Oscar nominations (healthy debate there!) and gave our picks for our favorite movies of 2019.

Check out The First Run for top ten picks from hosts Chris and Matt! Plus James from Pop Cult Net gives his top five picks for 2019.

In the meantime, here are JC and the Lady-Wan’s top five picks for last year …

JC’s #5: Honey Boy

“My number five is a movie I haven’t even seen, but I know it’s good!”

Lady-Wan’s #5: Captain Marvel

“I love the message. I loved the action. I laughed. I cried. I can’t wait for Captain Marvel 2 when they actually properly develop her character.”

JC’s #4: John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum

“I think its first 20 minutes of action are some of the best 20 minutes of action I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”

Lady-Wan’s #4: Toy Story 4

“It was nice to be reunited with the toys. The focus was on Bo Peep this time, and about learning to let go and it was just so cute, so funny.”

JC’s and the Lady-Wan had the same #3! Booksmart!

“I’m just here for the pool scene alone, which had the big reveal at the end of it. I was completely engulfed in this movie.”

“Billie Lourd steals the whole movie. I just wanted to keep watching where she ends up the rest of forever. Gigi! She’s the best!”

JC’s #2: Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood

“Nobody’s doing this! Making homages to films of the past, and eras of the past, and also revising the mistakes of history.”

Lady-Wan’s #2: Marriage Story

“It’s so nuanced … the tiniest things the characters are doing are saying everything about them.”

JC’s #1: The Farewell

“The Farewell is the best overall picture. I feel like it has everything you want in a movie.

Lady-Wan’s #1: Avengers Endgame

“This movie wrapped up 10 years of movies and hit everything possible? It is an accomplishment in filmmaking beyond anything and nobody’s talking about it.”
